The Cause of Obesity
Title: What is the cause of Obesity?
I’d like to thank Mike Ferguson for his
article Published:Saturday, September 12, 2015, Highlighting how Polk
County is the “seventh most obese metropolitan
area in the Country …”.
However the balance of his article,
along with the touted Polk Vision 5-2-1-0 Initiative, is nothing more than
repeating the “mantra” we have heard over the past 30 years; that “it
is calories and not sugar” that is the problem thus “less calories and more
exercise” has been the “medical solution,” yet people are fatter and sicker today
than ever before in history. Why?
Can we now address the origin
behind this illustrious obese distinction: It’s called The Metabolic Syndrome,
which includes:
·
Heart Disease,
·
Lipid Problems,
·
Hypertension,
·
Type2 Diabetes,
·
Dementia,
·
Cancer,
·
Polysystic Ovarian Syndrome and
·
Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease.
The Metabolic Syndrome
accounts for 75% of the Global Health Costs and impacts over 60% of Americans.
If there was one substance,
ingredient, or poison that is infused into our entire food supply, and identified
as a direct cause of the Metabolic Syndrome, and that substance was known to be
8 times more addictive than Cocaine, one might want to know what “it” was.
It’s called Sugar:
·
in
most of its forms to include: Sucrose, High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS), Fructose,
and its
·
Substitutions
such as: Acesulfame
potassium, Agave nectar. Aspartame AKA: Equal, NutraSweet, Neotame, Stevia leaf extract, Saccharin AKA: Sweet’N Low, Sucralose AKA: Splenda , Sugar alcohols AKA: Sorbitol, xylitol, mannitol, for example.
Before we have string of
scientist, on both sides of this issue, emerge touting why “their” view point
is etc; research the following references and decide for yourself:
- · Dr Robert H. Lustig, MD, UCSF Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology. There are a string of mini medical school courses on this subject.
- · John Yudkin who in 1972 wrote “Pure White and Deadly”
- · The Science Channel National Geographic Best Documentary 2015 - The Secrets Of Sugar.
- · Documentary, “That Sugar Film” by Damon Gameau
If you refuse to learn, no one can help

Time to Fix 23 + years of bad State and National Policy
Time
to Fix 23 + years of bad State and National Policy
Vote
NO on Rep. Pompeo's "Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act," (H.R. 1599).
The bill, is being called the “Deny Americans
the Right-to-Know Act (DARK Act),” and would do the following:
- Prevent
states from adopting their own Genetic Engineering (GE) otherwise known as
GMO labeling laws.
- Block any
attempt by states to make it illegal for food companies to put a “natural”
label on products that contain GE otherwise known as GMO
ingredients.
- Prevent
the Food and Drug Administration from requiring companies to label GE or
GMO ingredients and instead continue a failed “voluntary” labeling policy
As a long
time supporter of the GOP it pains me to realize that while under GOP
leadership, the then Vice President Dan Quayle announced the FDA's policy on
genetically engineered food (Genetically Modified Organisms or GMOs) as part of
his "regulatory relief initiative."
When Quayle
explained the flawed 1992 policy, he stated it was based on the idea that
genetic engineering (GMOs) are no different than traditional plant breeding,
and therefore required no new regulations.
And guess who
crafted this FDA new policy? The policy was crafted by Michael Taylor, a
former Monsanto lawyer who was hired by the Bush FDA to fill the newly created
position of deputy commissioner of policy.
Dan Quayle,
the man who could not spell potato, was either: miss-led or just simply got it
wrong; and yet subsequent elected Democrats and Republicans still get it
wrong.
After all,
where are the peer viewed studies that PROVE GMOs are Safe for our soils,
water, Human and Animal consumption?
In my lifetime I have heard so
called “experts” tell us that PCBs, Tobacco, Asbestos, Agent Orange, and even
DDT were safe. 50 years after known risks were proven, many of these
commodities are still on the market - GMOs are no different.
Contact Adam
Putnam, Governor Scott, all your elected State, Local and Federal
representatives and ask them - What side of history do they want to be
known to have stood for – as a protector of our Health and our State and
National soils, water and food - or someone that worked to Poison it?
It is time to
fix 23 plus years of unintended consequences of this bad policy.

Have Floridian leaders lost their mind?
Reply to: A New Leaf: Tax Law Change Would Be Boost for
Citrus Growers By Kevin Bouffard
THE LEDGER Published: Tuesday,
March 24, 2015 at 11:34 p.m.
Have Floridian
leaders lost their mind?
According to Adam Putnam,
Florida will lose all of its citrus crops in less than 10 years; why – because
of failed leadership and poor policy by Adam Putnam, Gov Scott and Marco Rubio,
and all those who continue to embrace the smallest subset of scientists who
think re-engineering nature is the way to go.
Brief
History of Citrus Greening:
· 1919
- first discovered in China
· 1956
- Lin Kung Hsiang (researcher from China) concluded that greening is a graft
transmissible infectious disease, NOT related to physiological disorders (e.g.
nutrient deficiencies, water logging, etc.) or soil borne diseases (e.g.
phytophthora, etc.)
·
2005 - Citrus greening was first confirmed in south Miami-Dade
county
·
2015 - Gov Scott, the GOP and DEMS in Tallahassee are giving tax
breaks to the very folks and corporations who have unleashed this disease on
our soil, in effort to continue to allow these grafted trees and Genetically
Modified trees to flourish in Florida. Farmers have stated that they now
have to re-plant trees annually in effort to combat citrus greening. Why do we
allow this bad policy to continue?
The solution, according to
Gov Scott and Adam Putnam, is too throw more of our money at their bad policy
in effort to prop up a failing industry – an industry known to fail due to bad
agricultural policy – I guess you just can’t fix stupid.

7 Steps to Reverse Obesity and Diabetes
7 Steps to Reverse Obesity and Diabetes
What disease affects EVERY other American and one in four kids? Type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes. Type 2 diabetes in America has tripled since the 1980s, and researchers estimate one in three Americans will have diabetes by mid-century. More than one-third of American adults are obese1. And one in three Medicare dollars is spent on diabetes making it the biggest driver of our federal debt. Sadly, these numbers continue to increase. Overall, it’s not a pretty picture, and experts predict things will only become worse.
I use the term “diabesity” to describe the continuum of health problems ranging from mild insulin resistance and overweight to obesity and diabetes. Diabesity is the underlying cause of most heart disease, cancer, and premature death in the world.
Tragically, these conditions are also 100% preventable and reversible.
Most people believe diabetes is not reversible. That’s unfortunate, considering its numerous complications including kidney failure, amputation, stroke, and dementia. I’ve also heard experts claim obesity is difficult to treat and maintaining long-term weight loss is almost impossible.
I wholeheartedly disagree. Science shows diabetes and obesity are preventable and reversible with aggressive utilize nutrition and lifestyle modifications.
It is caused by the 152 pounds of sugar and 146 pounds of flour a year eaten on average by every American – that is a toxic drug dose of diabetes causing food.
It is well known that massively obese patients can reverse their diabetes within a few weeks of getting a gastric bypass, even if they haven’t lost that much weight. Why? Because food is medicine and when you take disease producing food out and put the right food in the healing happens quickly. I recently had a patient lose 45 pounds and get off 54 units of insulin and all his diabetes medication. I implement these seven strategies every day with patients to prevent, treat, and reverse diabesity without drugs and surgery.
- Pull the sugar. A diet full of empty calories and quickly absorbed sugar, liquid sugar calories, and refined carbohydrates – all of which convert to sugar – creates high insulin levels, eventually leading to insulin resistance and Type 2 diabetes. Among the many problems of chronically high insulin levels include inflammation, high blood pressure, poor sex drive, increased risk for cancer, and depression. The most important thing you can do to reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes and obesity or reversing its impact is to eliminate or dramatically reduce sugar in all its many disguises.
- Stock up on whole, unprocessed foods. Whole, unprocessed real foods balance your blood sugar, reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, and improve your liver detoxification to prevent or reverse insulin resistance and diabetes. Choose a rich variety of colorful fruits and vegetables, plenty of omega-3 fats, coconut butter and olive oil, legumes, nuts, and seeds. Whole, real foods turn on all the right gene messages, promote a healthy metabolism, reverse insulin resistance and diabetes, and prevent aging and age-related diseases like diabetes and heart disease.
- Get the right nutrients. Supplements make your cells more sensitive to insulin and more effective at metabolizing sugar and fat. Combined with the right diet and lifestyle modifications, they can help you balance blood sugar and reverse or prevent diabetes. At the very minimum, I recommend:
- A high-quality multivitamin and mineral
- One to two grams of omega 3 fatty acids
- 1,000 – 2,000 IUs of vitamin D3
- 300 – 600 mg of alpha lipoic acid twice daily
- 200 – 600 mcg of chromium polynicotinate
- 5 to 5 grams of PGX, a unique type of fiber that controls appetite and blood sugar, before each meal with eight ounces of water
Other nutrients also play a role in balancing blood sugar and normalizing insulin levels, and I’ve discussed these more fully in my book, The Blood Sugar Solution or on this page.
- Get the right exercise. You needn’t spend hours at a gym to get exercise’s benefits. Even a 30-minute walk can help. Vigorous is the key for effective exercise that helps balance blood sugar and lower insulin levels. Get your heart rate up to 70 – 80% of its maximum capacity for 60 minutes, up to six times a week. Step it up a few notches with high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and strength training.Studies show HIIT can benefit Type 2 diabetes2 and obesity3. Best of all, you can do it in just minutes a day.
- Get sufficient sleep. Lack of sleep or poor sleep damages your metabolism, spikes sugar and carb cravings, makes you eat more, and increases your risk for numerous diseases including Type 2 diabetes. One study among healthy subjects found even a partial night’s poor sleep4 could induce insulin resistance. That’s why you must prioritize sleep so you get eight hours of solid, uninterrupted shuteye every night. Create a sleep ritual that includes herbal therapies, creating total darkness and quiet, and relaxing with my UltraBath.
- Control stress levels. In the face of chronic stress, our levels of insulin, cortisol, and inflammatory compounds called cytokines all increase. This drives the relentless metabolic dysfunction that leads to weight gain, insulin resistance, and eventually Type 2 diabetes. The links between stress, weight gain, mental disorders, and blood sugar imbalances show that managing stress becomes a critical component of obesity and diabetes management. You can’t eliminate stress, but you can learn to control it. Meditation, deep breathing exercises, yoga, massage, laughing, and dancing are among the best ways to manage stress and reverse Type 2 diabetes. Check out my blog to learn five ways to never be stressed again.
- Measure to improve. Research shows that people who track their results lose twice as much weight and do twice as well. Begin by getting a journal to track your progress in. That could be as simple as a pad of paper, a notebook, a spreadsheet in your computer, or whatever is convenient and works for you. Now, what should you track? In addition to what you eat, you’ll want to get a baseline of all measurements: your weight, weight, waist size, body mass index (BMI), and blood pressure (optional). Many patients become inspired when they see their results on paper.
Would you like help in balancing your blood sugar, losing weight, preventing disease and feeling great? I am excited to announce that I am releasing my # 1 New York Times Best Seller, The Blood Sugar Solution, in paperback on December 30. Pre-order your copy on Amazon.com or Barnes and Noble, today!

New Study Finds GMO Soy Toxic to Kidneys, Liver, and Reproduction
New Study Finds GMO Soy Toxic to Kidneys, Liver, and Reproduction

In North America, approximately 75 to 89% of the soy beans grown are genetically modified (GM). One may not realize it, but this is concerning news – especially because recent research found that GM soy is toxic to the kidneys, liver, and more.
There isn’t just one smoking gun anymore pointing at GMO toxicology. There is now an entire arsenal of scientific research proving that genetically modified organisms adversely affect the body. In yet another new study conducted by Egyptian researchers, rats given GM soy were found to have deadly amounts of toxicity in their kidneys, liver, testes, sperm, blood and even DNA.
Is there any question anymore about the true poisons that are biotech’s squalid wares?
The histopathological assessments made by the researchers of the rat’s bodily tissues leave no room for mistakes or misjudgments. You can’t argue over the results as some GMO-supporters have tried to do with other studies (like Seralini’s). Seralini’s study is one of the most quoted papers on the Internet, yet Monsanto gave a lengthy refutation of its findings.
Seralini stands firm in his findings, with the support of thousands of other scientists around the world. Though you’d think that he was some sort of quack with the comments that biotech makes to try to discredit him. What does Monsanto do when studies like this one, keep mounting? The evidence comes out again and again against GMOs – then what? What happens when research finds GM soy to be linked to sterility and infant mortality?
Just some of the sordid highlights of GMO-fed rats from the study’s findings include:
- DNA fragmentation increased significantly after the rats were fed GM soy, and the levels of toxicity increased at 30, 60 and 90 days.
- Glyphosate tolerant enzymes were found in the blood, and as researchers pointed out, “There is a growing concern that introducing foreign genes into food plants may have an unexpected and negative impact on human health.”
- The kidney’s bio-pathology increased. Blood creatinine and uric acid concentrations increased significantly in rats fed the GM diet for 30, 60, or 90 days.
- Chromosomal aberrations were observed. There was a “highly significant” number of abnormal cells.
Almost every organ observed, along with the blood and DNA showed damage from the GM diet. The researchers stated:
“The results of all the param-eters evaluated in our investigation were consistent and confirm that the GM diet fed to rats for 30, 60, or 90 days caused significant histopathological, biochemical, and cytogenetic changes in all examined tissues.”
No animals were tested for toxic affects after 90 days – but it didn’t take more than this to see an obvious correlation between the toxicity levels of the rats and their GM diet. The wheat-based control diet did not cause the same results.
So here’s the kicker — the largest U.S. producer of hybrid seeds for agriculture, Pioneer Hi-Bred International, created a genetically engineered soybean which was approved in 2010. Soy is also on the seven most commonly grown GM crops list.
Since that time, numerous food products have been processed and sold on grocery store shelves in the US contain GM soy.
Many people have soy allergies now, too, which are likely due to GM varieties. Symptoms often include:
- Hives; itching; or itchy, scaly skin (eczema)
- Swelling of lips, face, tongue and throat, or other body parts
- Asthma or wheezing, runny nose, cold symptoms
- Skin redness
- A tingling mouth
- Abdominal pains, nausea, and diarrhea
The Non-GMO Shopping Guide lists GM soy as one of the hidden ingredients that biotech has so sneakily infiltrated our food system with. Even many ‘health foods’ contain GM soy. Ironically, if you consume protein drinks and health food bars in an attempt to stay fit, you’re especially in danger of eating too much GM soy.
Soy protein isolate can be found in protein bars, meal replacement shakes, bottled fruit drinks, soups and sauces, meat analogs, baked goods, breakfast cereals, and some dietary supplements. Then there’s soy milk, tofu, and other more obvious culprits. Soy lecithin is another problem, and there’s even GM soy in baby formula! Companies that make Similac and Enfamil don’t seem to care.
This should come as no surprise to some – as biotech has even hidden GM in citric acid.
Other findings on GM soy from previous studies include these startling facts:
- More than half the babies of mother rats fed GM soy died within three weeks.
- Soy changes the testicle cells of rats fed a GM variety.
- Cooked GM soy contains as much as 7-times the amount of a known soy allergen
- Soy allergies skyrocketed by 50% in the UK, soon after GM soy was introduced
- GM Soy made the third generation sterile in one Russian study.
- GM proteins are continually produced inside our bodies once we eat GM products – including soy.
Millions of acres of crops are planted with GM soy every year. Let’s face it, GM soy is hard to avoid. Did Monsanto know about all these toxicity factors when they started selling GM Soy? It’s a moot point now. Monsanto frantically recalled GM canola seed in Canada once, but once its planted, is it too late?
For now, you should be vigilant about checking labels, making sure that our government upholds labeling laws, and boycott all companies who sell anything with GM Soy in it. You can also look for substitutes for soy sauce, tofu, miso soup, and other soy-obvious foods. Even committed vegans can choose non-GMO varieties of soy to protect their health.
